Laying good foundations

How to lay good foundations for registration.

If you are thinking about professional registration as a future career objective, there are things you can do to ensure that when you come to apply the process is as straightforward as possible.

Accredited qualifications

If you are choosing which course to take, you are advised to seek an IET accredited qualification.

The IET accredits courses as providing the appropriate underpinning knowledge and understanding for CEng and IEng registration. An accredited course has undergone a process of thorough peer-review of content and resources.

The EC(UK) website lists accredited or approved degree courses.

As the qualifications associated with EngTech are more complicated in nature, if you are considering applying for EngTech you are advised to contact a professional registration advisor to discuss your individual circumstances.

If you hold an accredited qualification

It may meet the requirements for registration in part or in full, please check against the requirements in UK-SPEC. If your accredited qualifications meet the requirements for registration in full, submitting a copy of your certificate(s) with your application will constitute sufficient evidence of your underpinning knowledge and understanding.  If your qualifications meet the requirements for registration in part, you will need to submit evidence to demonstrate you have met the difference in some way.

If you hold a non-accredited qualification

You will need to submit evidence to demonstrate that you have underpinning knowledge and understanding of a standard equivalent to an accredited qualification.

Please note that as UK-SPEC is a competence framework, the IET is not able to assess the suitability of qualifications in isolation, or before the point of seeking registration.  If you do not hold accredited qualifications but believe yourself to be working at a level appropriate to the category of registration you seek, you are advised to consult a professional registration advisor for individual advice on how best to present your case to the IET.

Employer accreditation

Employers may apply to have their professional development or training schemes accredited.  In effect this means that a professional development or training scheme has met certain professional development base requirements for a professional engineer (registered member). An IET accredited scheme will be an asset to your application for professional registration.

A list of employers with accredited professional development or training schemes can be found on the accreditation pages.

Record keeping

The application form for professional registration requires you to give evidence to demonstrate you have met the appropriate generic competences. This is made considerably less arduous if you have kept records of your professional development and activity with this in mind.

The IET offers two services to support members' record keeping: Career Manager (an online system) and PD-How To (a paper based system).
