Acoustics is the study of sound. It is no denying that nowadays acoustics plays a very important role in auditorium & studio designs, noise control, sound reinforcement system,Hi– Fi system, and speech intelligibility. Yet, its first formula was developed and introduced to the world only about 100 years ago despite the fact that many opera houses had been built in Europe many decades ago.

To some people, acoustics is a new and boring subject. But, if you like sound, this talk will give you some basic knowledge concerning sound. We use our ears to listen sound. But, do not trust your ears. Air absorbs sound only at 1 kHz and above, therefore we have a lot of low frequency sound in our environment, thus affecting the speech clarity.

An unconfirmed report said high noise level helps birth control, believe it or not!

This talk consists of about 100 slides and will take at least 90 minutes. At the end of the talk, some new acoustics research works and developments will be mentioned, just for information.

Ir. Chuah retired from the Radio TV Malaysia (RTM) since 1992 after serving 30 years as a broadcasting engineer and his last post held in RTM was the “Director of Engineering” in the Design & Development Division.

In Sept 1998, he was invited by the SUKOM 98 Board to be official Acoustics Consultant for the 16^thCommonwealth Games (SUKOM 98) held in Kuala Lumpur. So far, he has undertaken and completed about 100 projects concerning Broadcasting, Acoustics, AV systems and Noise Control. Recently, he had completed the design and installation of an acoustics treatment and AV systems costing about RM 18,000,000.00 (tax free), with floating floor and copper –sheet shielding in Putra Jaya.

Over the past three decades, he has conducted numerous seminars in Room Acoustics and Sound Reinforcement System courses and published 22 articles about his works in IEM Bulletins and overseas engineering magazines. In addition, he used to give public lectures in Room Acoustics, Noise Control and Sound Reinforcement System.

The last lecture given was “Basic Sound Reinforcement System” held on 22 May 2008 organized by the “Malaysian Senior Scientists Association” at Pusat Sains Negara and sponsored by the National Science Centre.

The lecture was attended by about 250 people, including Form 5 and Form 6 students.
