Amanda Dowd was educated at King's High School for Girls, Warwick and Leicester University, from where she graduated with a B.Sc. in Engineering in 1974 and a PhD in 1981. She spent 2.5 years on the staff at Leicester as a Research Demonstrator, then moved onto 4 years with Rank Taylor Hobson, initially as an electronics design engineer and then as a software development engineer, followed by 1.5 years for Philips Business Systems in Cambridge as a Senior Analyst/Design Engineer.

Since 1983 Amanda has been with Warwick Manufacturing Group, part of the School of Engineering at Warwick University, initially as a Teaching Fellow, but soon after being appointed to a Lectureship. She has been the Academic Director of Graduate Studies for the Group since 1995, which role involves responsibility for award-wide academic quality issues and acting as the main interface with the University centrally in matters relating to taught postgraduate and post-experience courses. She also has operational responsibility for the collaborative programmes which operate in China (including Hong Kong), India, Malaysia,South Africa and Thailand.

Amanda has been active with the IET since she was a research student at Leicester University, acting then as the Secretary to her local Younger Members Committee. Since then she has served on Council and several Boards and Committees, including Overseas Board, Public Affairs Board, Members Publications Committee (which she latterly chaired until it was disbanded in 2003), Court of Governors of the Benevolent Fund and IEE Review Editorial Panel (which she chaired from its inception in 1993 until it was disbanded in 2003).She has been an Membership Interviewer since 1996 and is currently a member of Council.In addition she has been a Neighbourhood Link Engineering and a School governor.
