S757 - Science teaching in schools

Description

Enquiry into science teaching in schools: Institution of Engineering and Technology comments to the House of Lords Select Committee on Science and Technology.

Abstract

This is an extremely timely enquiry, and the IET believes new solutions are needed. We must get the right skills, knowledge and resources into classrooms and we need to encourage more young people to study science and technology. One of the critical issues is the supply of appropriately qualified science teachers. However, attracting more entrants into the profession is only half the challenge; retention is also a major issue. Government needs to openly discuss pay, conditions, recruitment, retention and training with schools, teachers, trade unions and teacher associations, and radical solutions may be needed. A number of ideas are also suggested to attract and motivate students to study science.
