S806b - Public Benefit and the Advancement of Education

Description

Consultation on “Draft supplementary guidance on public benefit and the advancement of education”: IET comments to the Charity Commission Direct.

Abstract

The definition of education and lifelong learning should explicitly include continuous professional development such as that required to attain professional registration with, for example, the Engineering Council. Advancing education should include mentoring and coaching together with the award of grants, scholarships and bursaries to enable individuals, irrespective of means, to benefit. It is particularly pleasing to see that learned societies are included in the types of charities that advance education. It is unreasonable in this context to differentiate between professional education and vocational education.
